in the land of vinted
Posted in wine on May 3rd, 2008Cari amici,
Well it’s another exciting Friday night with Dante and red wine – just got through Purgatory, and am hopeful that the wines to come in these coming months will be less than a drudge through the land of lesser sins. Two wines to report from the circle of gluttony:
1. Falcon Ridge Syrah (TJ’s, 6.99) – on special at the moment and really quite nice; easily drinkable with milder cheeses and spring vegetables as well as just for the May helluvit. Produced and bottled in Healdsburg, CA – this small detail, as pointed out by my far wiser pater familias, Steve Carey, is really the trick to finding a great wine at a lower price. Just take a quick look at the back label! Remember P & B without the jelly! That’s dumb: sorry.
2. Camelot Cabernet Sauvignon (TJ’s, 7.99) – recommended by the staff at my local Joe’s and so, in the face of limited Cab offerings under 10 dollars, I give it a try. The back label features the lamest comparison of this wine to the “magical kingdom of King Arthur’s Court, where beauty, goodness and harmony prevailed.” This is dumb, sorry again. The wine is decent, though its claims of “juniper and tobacco-leaf aromas and sumptuous black cherry” do not really ring true (which is no surprise to me) in its complete lack of complexity. But, another P & B test? Nope. “Vinted” and bottled in Santa Rosa, CA. Hence, blah.
Question is, can we find a really complex and meaty CAB for under 10? Post it up!
